Colours and icons

Any task can have a colour, an icon, or both. They make a list easier to scan, so you can find the one you're after without reading every line.

Neither of them means anything to Nydli. A colour is for your eyes. Nothing filters or sorts by it. If you want something the app understands, use a label.

You'll see the colour wherever the task is

  • In List, on the Dashboard and on a label's own page, you get a stripe down the front edge of the row.
  • In Calendar, the colour fills the whole chip.
  • Anywhere else the task is named, you get a dot beside the title.

An icon shows up next to the task name wherever the task appears.

You pick both in the task

Open a task and use the colour and icon boxes in the panel. The colour picker gives you three ways to choose one:

  • Your own row of colours, when you want one of your usual ones.
  • A hex field, when you want an exact colour. You can paste the code straight from a brand guide.
  • Your computer's own colour picker, if you want the eyedropper or the full spectrum.

The icons come from the icon library, and you can search it. You can also use any emoji, which is often quicker when the thing you mean has an obvious one.

If a task doesn't need a colour at all, there's a struck-through circle in the picker that clears it.

You decide which colours you're offered

The row you get when you colour a task is yours to change. Nydli starts you off with six soft colours and a handful of icons, and you can edit the row in Settings → Appearance → Task colours and icons.

In there you can:

  • Add a colour or icon to the row
  • Take one out
  • Drag them into the order you want, or move them with the arrow keys
  • Reset to defaults if you've made a mess of it

Two things that might worry you, and shouldn't:

  • When you take a colour out of your row, it never changes tasks that already use it. The row only decides what you're offered next time.
  • Keep at least one. If you clear the last one, Nydli just brings the built-in set back, so use Reset to defaults if that's what you meant.

The set is your own, so a colleague keeps theirs.

Turn the hand-drawn icons off if you'd rather have plain ones

Nydli's own icons come in two styles. Whimsical mode is on by default, and it gives you the hand-drawn ones. If you turn it off in Settings → Appearance, you get the plain ones instead.

It only changes how they look.
