Categories

Categories are the folders your work lives in. You'll find them in the list down the left side of Nydli, and almost everything else in the app is filed under them.

You can put categories inside other categories, as deep as you like. Most people have one category per client, and then a category per project inside it:

There's no right answer here. Some people work by client, and some by project. Nydli doesn't have an opinion about it, so set it up the way you already think about your work.

Make one whenever you need it

You make a category with + New at the top of the sidebar. If you want one inside another, open that category's menu and choose New subcategory.

When you click a category, you see its tasks. The List shows you that category and everything inside it, so when you click a client you get everything you have filed under that client.

You'll find a menu on every category

When you hover a row, you will see three dots at the end of it. That menu holds:

  • New task and New subcategory, which both make something inside the category. The rest of the menu acts on the category itself.
  • Rename
  • Move to… and Move up / Move down
  • Copy
  • Add to favourites
  • Archive
  • Delete

You can also drag a category. Drag it up or down to move it, or drop it on another category to put it inside that one.

When you move one, everything inside comes along

That means the subcategories and all the tasks.

Move to… opens a picker with every category you could move it under. There's a Top level option in there as well, for when you want to pull something out to the far left.

A copy comes out empty, without the tasks

You get the category and its subcategories, and they're empty. The tasks stay where they are.

We did that on purpose. If you have a set of categories you use for every new client, you can copy it and get the same set again, empty and ready to fill in.

You'll find the copy right under the original.

You can archive one without losing anything

When you archive a category, it comes out of your lists and nothing is deleted. Everything inside it goes too, and you can bring the category back whenever you want.

Your hours stay on the timesheet either way. Archiving only changes your lists.

See Done, archive or delete? for which of the three you want.

You can't delete one with open tasks in it

Before you delete anything, Nydli counts up what's in the category and shows you. Two things will stop the delete:

  • Open tasks. Deal with those first, or archive the category instead.
  • Anything archived inside it. Deleting never reaches into the archive, so you'd have to bring those back out first.

The dialog offers to archive it instead, and that's usually what people want anyway.

When a delete does go through, the category and everything left in it moves to the Bin. You have 30 days to change your mind.

Star the ones you use most

When you star a category from its menu, you'll see it on your Dashboard under Favourites. Favourites are your own, so starring a category doesn't put it on anybody else's Dashboard.

This helps when you have forty categories in the sidebar and you only work in two or three of them this week.

Fold away what you're not using

You fold a category away with the arrow beside it. If the list has grown long, you can use Collapse all at the top to fold everything at once.

Nydli remembers which categories you folded, per workspace, so they're still folded when you open Nydli on your phone.
